GIF to PNG Converter

Convert GIF images to PNG at the original dimensions, one file at a time or as a batch.

How to use the GIF to PNG Converter

  1. Drop your GIF files into the upload area, or click it to pick files from your device.
  2. Adjust the quality slider if the output format is a lossy one. Higher values keep more detail and produce larger files.
  3. Press Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish.
  4. Download each PNG file individually, or use Download all as ZIP when you converted several images at once.

How to convert GIF to PNG

Add one or more GIF files, pick a quality level if the option is shown, and press Convert. Each image is decoded, redrawn on a canvas and saved again in the PNG format. Converting several files at once is supported, and the results can be downloaded together as a ZIP archive.

GIF and PNG compared

GIF stores up to 256 colours per frame and supports simple animation and one fully transparent colour. It works best for short animations and very simple flat graphics, and is a weaker choice for photographs, because the 256-colour limit causes visible banding.

PNG stores images without losing a single pixel and supports a full alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent. It is the better fit for logos, icons, screenshots, line art and images that need transparency, while it is less suitable for large photographs, where the file size grows quickly.

Nothing is thrown away

PNG stores the image without discarding detail, so the result is pixel-for-pixel what came out of the decoder. Be aware that a lossless format cannot restore detail that was already lost in the source file.

What to check after converting

  • Open the result at full size and look at edges, text and flat colour areas first — that is where compression artefacts appear.
  • Compare the file size against the original. If a PNG file is larger than the GIF source, lower the quality slider or reconsider the format.
  • Check that the image dimensions are unchanged. Conversion never resizes an image; use the resizer tools for that.

Format support in browsers

Saving files relies on the image encoders built into your browser. PNG, JPG and WebP are available almost everywhere. AVIF encoding is only present in some recent browsers, and the tool will tell you clearly when the format you picked cannot be written on the device you are using, rather than producing a broken file.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting GIF to PNG reduce the image quality?
PNG is a lossless format, so the conversion itself does not add new compression artefacts. Any detail that was already missing from the GIF source cannot be recovered, however.
Can I convert several GIF files at once?
Yes. Select or drop multiple files, run the conversion, and download the results one by one or together in a single ZIP archive.
Are the image dimensions changed during conversion?
No. The width and height stay exactly the same. If you also need a different size, use the Image Resizer after converting.
