Image MIME Type Checker

Find out what an image file really is, regardless of the extension in its name.

How to use the Image MIME Type Checker

  1. Add one or more image files.
  2. Press Analyse.
  3. Read the results listed under each file name.

How this tool reads your file

The browser reports the MIME type it detects when decoding the file, which is based on the content rather than the file name.

When the extension lies

Renaming a file does not change its contents. A WebP image saved as photo.jpg is still a WebP file, and upload forms that check the real type will reject it. This tool shows the type that software actually sees, which explains most "unsupported format" errors even when the extension looks right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check several files at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like and each one is listed with its own result.
Is anything changed in my file?
No. The file is only read and reported on; no new file is written unless you use one of the conversion tools.
