How to convert BMP to PNG
Add one or more BMP files, pick a quality level if the option is shown, and press Convert. Each image is decoded, redrawn on a canvas and saved again in the PNG format. Converting several files at once is supported, and the results can be downloaded together as a ZIP archive.
BMP and PNG compared
BMP is an uncompressed bitmap format from the Windows world. Files are large because every pixel is stored literally, but nothing is ever compressed away. It works best for legacy Windows software and simple pixel-level work, and is a weaker choice for anything published on the web, because of the file size.
PNG stores images without losing a single pixel and supports a full alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent. It is the better fit for logos, icons, screenshots, line art and images that need transparency, while it is less suitable for large photographs, where the file size grows quickly.
Converting to PNG does not create transparency
PNG supports an alpha channel, but a BMP source has no transparent pixels to carry over. The converted file keeps the same solid background it had before; removing a background is a separate editing step.
Nothing is thrown away
PNG stores the image without discarding detail, so the result is pixel-for-pixel what came out of the decoder. Be aware that a lossless format cannot restore detail that was already lost in the source file.
What to check after converting
- Open the result at full size and look at edges, text and flat colour areas first — that is where compression artefacts appear.
- Compare the file size against the original. If a PNG file is larger than the BMP source, lower the quality slider or reconsider the format.
- Check that the image dimensions are unchanged. Conversion never resizes an image; use the resizer tools for that.
Format support in browsers
Saving files relies on the image encoders built into your browser. PNG, JPG and WebP are available almost everywhere. AVIF encoding is only present in some recent browsers, and the tool will tell you clearly when the format you picked cannot be written on the device you are using, rather than producing a broken file.
